What Causes Forehead Wrinkles?

As we age, we tend to get those wrinkles across our foreheads. Everyone knows this is a part of the aging process. But what really causes those forehead wrinkles? The answer is simple with a few buts. The simple answer is that as you age, your collagen production decreases in addition to your skin elasticity deteriorating. This means that your skin does not spring back as quickly into place, which ultimately causes wrinkles. These two factors combined make it easy for forehead wrinkles to appear as you age. You may be wondering if it is that simple, you age and you get forehead wrinkles. There are other factors that contribute to the loss of collagen and decrease in elasticity such as hormones, environmental factors, and hydration/diet.

As we age, hormone production decreases as we move toward menopause and through the process. The loss of estrogen causes reduced estrogen amounts, which in turn causes reduced collagen production. You could say that hormones are a cause of forehead wrinkles. The hormonal process that causes forehead wrinkles is a natural one, basically, out of our control.

Environmental Factors
There are environmental factors which may cause forehead wrinkles and other wrinkles merely by exposure. Exposure to free radicals and toxins is known to cause wrinkles. Sun exposure is a factor in the cause of forehead wrinkles. Failure to protect your skin from sun damage is a guarantee for future wrinkles and other skin damage.

Smoking is also known to cause wrinkles simply by depriving the skin of oxygen and Vitamin A. This oxygen deprivation is caused by narrowing of blood vessels, a direct result of nicotine. Additionally, the 4000 chemicals in cigarette smoke damage the collagen and elastin in your skin. The facial expressions made when smoking, such as pursing your lips or squinting your eyes, may contribute to forehead wrinkles. Additionally, the heat from smoking causes damage to your skin, which in turn causes wrinkles.

Hydration and diet are extremely important in the prevention of wrinkles. Hydration is part of the factor that keeps your elastin intact. A well hydrated body promotes and preserves a youthful skin appearance. Additionally, a diet rich in anti-oxidants is significant to reducing the free radicals in your body. Additional benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is the hydration factor. Many fruits and vegetables have a high water content, which contribute to supple, elastic skin.

As you can see, some of the factors that contribute to forehead wrinkles are within our control. While we do not always have control over environmental toxins, we do have control over our personal habits such as smoking or sun exposure. We absolutely have control over our diets and hydration. Wrinkles are definitely a part of the natural aging process, but that does not mean that we cannot do everything possible on the other side to prevent forehead wrinkles. Simple gestures such as smiling instead of frowning are known to reduce or prevent forehead wrinkles.
